Even before America entered World War II officially, hers sons had met the challenge of aerial combat on both sides of the world. In Asia, Claire Chennault's famous American Volunteer Group (AVG) "Flying Tigers" battled Japan's best from Toungoo in Burma to Henyang in central China. Among the best of the Tigers was David L. "Tex" Hill, son of American missionaries, and himself born in Korea. Initially a naval aviator, he was recruited to join the American Volunteer Group and gained at least 18 victories and more than 20 probables. He served in the United States Army Air Force, the Air Force Reserve, and rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Air National Guard. The original painting was donated to the USAF art collection.
