On November 4, 1962, Col. Clyde B. East of the 20th Tactical Recon Squadron, flew his RF-101 over Havana harbor on a “verification flight” to ensure that the promised removal of Soviet missiles was in fact taking place. Successful aerial reconnaissance coupled with brilliant statesmanship enabled the world to slowly return from the brink of nuclear war for the first time in history. Personally autographed by Col. Limited Edition of 1000 Print Size: 24" x 18" As America's highest ranking reconnaissance ace, Clyde East's flying career spans World War II, Korea, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and Southeast Asia. Too young for the US Army Air Corps, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and, after mastering the Tiger Moth and Harvard, earned his wings and commission in 1942. He was soon ordered to England and began flying interdiction and harassment missions into France, Belgium, and Holland. East transferred to the USAAFs 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in 1944 where he flew Spitfires and later, the reconnaissance version of the famed P-51 (F-6C/D) Mustang . Joe O'Grady led one of the most crucial USAF missions of the Cold War! O'Grady was born in Huntington, Arkansas in April 1921, but grew up in Amarillo, Texas. After one year of college, he joined the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in 1942. He first flew the Stearman PT-13 Kaydet and then the Vultee BT-13 Valiant. He earned his pilot wings and a commission in 1944. Assigned to Luke Field, Arizona, he instructed in the North American AT-6 Texan and the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. After the war, he served as a legal officer in Guam and Japan. He stayed current flying the Douglas B-26 Invader, Curtiss C-46 Commando, and the Douglas C-47 Skytrain .
