"Chuck" Yeager, flying the Bell X-1, became the first person to successfully fly an aircraft faster than the speed of sound. The event, called 'the greatest achievement since the first successful flight of the original Wright Brothers' airplane" in the 1947 Collier Trophy citation, was commemorated at Edwards Air Force Base, California, October 14, 1997. Exactly 50 years after the original event, at the same time of 10:29 a.m., Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager reenacted this milestone flight. However, this time it was in an F-15, with Bob Hoover flying an F-16 chase plane. Hoover is an air show pilot who flew chase for Yeager during the original breaking of the sound barrier. The F-15 Eagle is an all-weather, extremely maneuverable, tactical fighter designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. It can penetrate enemy defense and out-perform and out-fight any current or projected enemy aircraft. (Reprinted from the Edwards Air Force Base Open House and Air Show program, October 14, 1997)
